Commitment and Community
Commitment
Commitment from the candidate is necessary. With addiction, commitment
is usually absent from thought as drugs become all consuming. Therefore,
upon entering the community, candidates are only admitted if there
is agreement to the minimum stay of 3 months. After such time all
candidates will be asked to make an annual commitment, on average
we would expect long term addicts to require 2 or 3 years to rebuild
their lives. Some may wish to stay longer, or for life and there
will be options made for this.
For those who are ready and wish to resume interaction
with the world, we will provide assistance in employment, housing,
marriage and relationship counseling. We hope that the brother will
continue to take part in the community's prayer life and may help
to bring others in need of rehabilitation to the community
Community
Upon entry to the community, the candidate will be known
as Brother. The community spirit
is an essential component as the life of a drug addict will have
usually excluded and alienated him from family and society. To rectify
this loss. We will provide a caring home with all the fruits and
responsibilities of communal life.
Reflection on the nature of community is a useful tool
for understanding one's place in the world and how one's actions
impact on others, regaining what was lost in addiction.
All brothers will be allocated a Brother-Angel, an
ex-addict, who is with him 24/7. This system works well in Cenecolo,
providing a mentor, companion and director for the new brother.
We intend to keep disruptions to growth and healing,
to a minimum such as visits and outside contact therefore guidelines
will be developed to ensure this. Visitors must give at least 24
hours notice, be willing to be searched, and be supportive of the
community's goals and methods.
